I’m a firm believer that the most important thing a kid (and parent) needs is sleep. But they also need to eat everyday. In a perfect world, we’d serve them home-cooked, vitamin and mineral-laden goodness for every single meal of every day. In reality, Chick Fil A is a food group and my kids taste buds change all the time. A meal away from home can be a nice change of pace for everyone. But eating out with kids is just, well, interesting. That’s why I love a good family friendly restaurant in San Antonio.
Top 6 Family Friendly Restaurants in San Antonio
There are loads of family-friendly, affordable, and delicious restaurants your kids will love in the San Antonio area. We’ve compiled a list of the best six San Antonio restaurants for kids, so read (and drool) on.
1. The Pearl Brewery
The Pearl Brewery has multiple restaurants, shopping, a farmers market, and more. However, the thing that seals the deal for us is that we can grab food, sit outside, and let the kids play in the splash pad. It’s the perfect atmosphere for outdoor dining, and it’s expected that you’ll have a kid running around getting wet whereas other restaurants you have to keep them somewhat contained. The Pearl Brewery also has events ranging from storytime for kids to music and entertainment. There’s really so much you can do that involve food and kids, that you could make it an entire day and bring home tired, happy, and full kids.
2. The Friendly Spot Ice House
Outdoor seating? Check. Playground? Check. Dog-friendly? Check. Yep, that’s right. The Friendly Spot welcomes dogs, so your entire family can come along. The prices are also just right to feed a family on a budget.
Casual, outdoor seating gives this traditional American-fare establishment a relaxed, comfortable vibe. Order your choice of wings, nachos, fish tacos or burgers, and let the kids choose from affordable $5 meals. The sweet treat offerings are nostalgic and cheap: Push-ups and ice cream cones for the win! Also, no one is going to judge you if you let your kiddos run amok. There’s a playground here, so they can get their sillies out while you sit back and enjoy a cold one from one of their 200+ beer offerings.
3. El Chaparral (Helotes)
El Chaparral has two locations- one in Helotes (where we go) and one in San Antonio. The food is always good and the kids love it too. While most Mexican restaurants have sub-par kids menus, El Chaparral has really good choices that the kids will love. They still serve their famous, “Bean Soup,” as an appetizer, just like they did in 1977. The owners, Carlos and Mary Garcia opened El Chaparral in 1972 (having to sell their home to make it happen). Since then, El Chaparral has become knowns as “world class.” With how good the food is and how it’s family friendly, I can’t disagree.
Date Idea: We don’t go to the San Antonio location, but we hear it’s a great place (Cantina) for drinks with friends or even a date. Either way, you won’t be disappointed by the food.
4. Wraptitude
Wraptitude offers burgers, tacos, and of course wraps, in a casual atmosphere. This is a place where you can choose between noshing on a healthy, fresh Caprese wrap or pigging out on a juicy rattlesnake burger topped with deep fried bacon and chipotle cream cheese. It’s basically heaven on a bun. Founded by a group of friends, Wraptitude puts off a welcoming, laid back vibe which makes it a perfect food stop for families. Sit indoors, or enjoy plentiful outdoor seating and let the kids enjoy the playground. There is a fire pit for the cold months and canopies for the warm months, making this a great year-round destination to bring the kids.
5. Big’z Burger Joint
Big’z Burger’s serves burger baskets in a barn. Tell your littles to say that five times fast, then head to Big’z. This San Antonio burger joint provides ample seating inside and out. Step up to the old-school counter to order and choose from plenty of burgers and toppings. Baskets are served with a side of crispy french fries, sweet potato fries, or buttermilk battered onion rings.
After dinner, your kids will enjoy the sweet treats including amazingly thick milkshakes. Then, let them burn off all that sugar by running wild on the turf lawn. Big’z is often packed, but well worth the wait.
6. Blanco BBQ
At Blanco BBQ, you can order catering, dine in, or take delicious family style BBQ to go. If you’re in a big hurry, you can order your meal drive-thru style. The portions are large, the prices are very reasonable, and they serve meat, meat, and more meat. The sides include all the fixins’ you’d expect at a Texas BBQ. What’s not to love?
Some of the perks that make Blanco’s a top San Antonio restaurant include an epic tree-shaded play structure, ample outdoor seating, and live country music on the weekends. Oh, and really good Frito Pie.
Honorable Mention: Schilo’s Delicatessen
No playscape here, but Schilo’s is an old-fashioned style deli worth trying. If you’re interested in infusing a little history into your dining experience, the word around town is that Schilo’s is the oldest restaurant in San Antonio. Schilo’s does an amazing job serving up German food with Texas flair. They are open for breakfast and feature traditional German-style breakfasts, sausage galore, and satisfying breakfast tacos. The kids may not want to sample the potato pancakes with applesauce, but they’ll be hooked after one bite.
